LTC class information

Updated: Feb 7, 2021

The Massachusetts Basic Handgun Safety course is the standard course you will need to take to qualify to obtain a first-time issue License To Carry (LTC). This includes an LTC that would be used for sporting, hunting, target or concealed carry. The Licensing Authority in your city or town will determine if you will be eligible for a restricted or "Restrictions: None" LTC. (No restrictions means that you can carry concealed).

This course will also satisfy requirements for a Firearms Identification Card (FID) but is not required. However, if you intend to apply only for an FID card (for instance: you are 18 years old and do not yet qualify for an LTC due to age) this course will satisfy the requirement and the certificate can later be used to obtain your LTC.

This basic handgun safety course will consist of both classroom and live-fire segments taught on site at the Springfield Sportman's Club in Monson, MA. Instruction will include range rules and etiquette, safe handling of firearms, storage, applicable laws, review of types of firearms, equipment selection, and hands-on instruction with various firearms. A live-fire component will also be included. The intent of this course is to offer an informative and practical introduction to safe handling of firearms. This will serve as an introduction and foundation to the shooting sports. I hope to offer a positive, informative experience in which the new shooter will gain an understanding and appreciation of firearms.
